4989 Children Rescued: The Journey to Freedom Continues

Two Weeks Ago, They Were in Slavery. Today, 4989 Children Are Waking Up Free.

This past 30 days have been one of the most significant and heart-wrenching months in our history. It’s an amazing privilege to tell the stories of our heroic partners and the children we serve. In order to keep them safe, don’t share this publicly or on social media.

4,989 children—2,223 boys and 2,766 girls—were rescued from brutal slavery in illegal rock quarries. The children range in age, and most are between 8 and 16 years old.

Among those rescued 320 girls aged 13 to 16 are pregnant due to sexual violence. These girls are receiving urgent medical and emotional care as we speak. As we share that story with you, we feel how weighty and dark that is, and we know it is difficult to read.

Some additional difficult news is that 265 children have HIV also due to horrific sexual abuse. While this is just a glimpse of the trauma these kids have experienced, we are committed to walk with each child to full restoration—no matter what they’re facing.

Right now, all children are staying at a secure base camp, a site formerly used by the military and now transformed into a temporary refuge. They sleep on tarps laid on the ground inside military tents, each with a blanket of their own. It’s not ideal, but it’s safe and exponentially better than a few weeks ago. For their protection, we can’t share real photos of the camp. But we’ve created a few generated images to give you a sense of what their current reality looks like—simple, rugged, and filled with hope.

We’ve separated the boys and girls into different sections, and to restore a sense of family and safety we’ve grouped older kids with younger ones of the same gender. The children speak four different languages—fortunately our volunteer staff are able to translate to make sure every child is heard and understood.

Amidst the chaos, our team is bringing rhythm and care to their days. The kids follow a daily schedule that includes prayer, morning exercises, meals, time for rest, and games. They have already started making friends and are beginning to heal. Most of these children have never experienced school, but as we transition them to permanent housing, they will learn to read, write and receive the high-quality education they deserve.

As you read this, our team is working to secure permanent leased homes. Our original plan to house kids in churches and safe houses in the region had to shift because of the severe backlash from quarry owners.

Here’s the plan for the next 6 months:

Phase 1: Rescue & Safety – Complete

Phase 2: Temporary Housing & Medical Care – Ongoing
Kids are recovering at “Base Camp” in military tents.

Phase 3: Reunification & Restorative Care – Starting Soon
This includes shelter, food, school, trauma counseling, and reuniting most of the kids with their safe families.

What You Can Do:

GIVE:

$750 funds one family reunification

Dream with us

This is more than a rescue—it’s the next bold step in the fight against slavery. We’ve now welcomed thousands of new children into freedom, and we envision a future where they rise to join the 2,712 graduates already leading, healing, and protecting others.

The journey ahead includes a 10+ year commitment to the little children rescued last week—and the thousands more to come.

That future includes building homes across five more states each caring for hundreds of kids, expanding our trauma care programs for pregnant girls and older survivors, funding scholarships for trade school and so much more.

We’re not just making space for survival but for every child to discover who God made them to be. When we give a rescued child a chance to live that life, we build a legacy of physical and spiritual freedom that will echo for generations.

Dream big with faith,

David Moorhead
